OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE
The Blessed Mother appeared to a poor, indigenous Aztec man who had converted to Catholicism in 1531. Juan Diego (later St.) was caring for his very sick uncle at the time when our Lady appeared to him on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico. She spoke to him in his native language and identified herself as the Mother of God in her radiant appearance. Mary visited him four more times from Dec 9th to the 12th, asking him to go to the Bishop and request that a chapel be built on top of the hill (now part of Mexico City). (During this time, his uncle was cured.) The Bishop wanted proof of the miraculous vision, and Juan Diego returned to Mary with the request. Juan had a cape made of coarse cactus fiber, which is called a “tilma”. She asked him to take these beautiful Castilian roses in his tilma, and that would be a sign to the Bishop. (It was winter in Mexico, and roses were not blooming!).
When Juan Diego opened the tilma in front of the Bishop and his assistant, the yellow roses spilled out, and the Bishop recognized they were from Castile, Spain, where he grew up! What’s more, the tilma had an image imprinted in it of our Lady, dressed in Aztec clothing and color. The image had several signs for the Aztecs: her indigenous appearance; the blue-green mantle representing royalty; and her feet upon the moon, showing power over the Aztec deity Quetzalcoatl. The image is on cactus fiber that should have decayed within 30 years, but is still intact 495 years later, with scientific studies finding no evidence of it being sketched or painted with brush strokes. The stars on it are astronomically correct on December 12, 1531, and there are many other amazing features. It is displayed in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. Over 40 million Aztecs and other indigenous people have converted to Catholicism.
The pilgrimage will allow us to see the area where Juan Diego’s uncle lived and to spend time at the Basilica and surrounding buildings, as well as visit other holy sites.
