A PRE-K & KINDERGARTEN PROJECT IN KONDO DEWATA

by a CICM missionary team in South Sulawesi—Indonesia

St. Mary Mother of God is a new parish in Kondo Dewata—Archdiocese of Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Located in the interior mountainous region of Toraja, it has 27 outstations with more than 4,000 Catholics spread over the two districts (Simbuang and Mappak). We found at least 4 critical needs in these remote districts such as: No electricity, lack of access to clean water, bad road infrastructure making for difficult travel, and insufficient and lacking attention to adequate education at schools. Most of the students of pre-k and kinder, elementary and middle school live in remote villages; some of them have to walk approximately 10 kilometers (approx. 6.2 miles) one-way in order to arrive at their schools. I imagine just how tiring it is for them, and it becomes worse in rainy season.

Seeing what they have to go through on a daily basis, assessing the challenges and their limited resources, we are called to help them get out, though partially, of their misery. We plan to establish A PRE-K and KINDERGARTEN, and we would like to start this project in April 2025 and complete it, hopefully, within a year. With this new pre-k and kinder building, though still they wear cheap flip-flops in dry season and just barefoot in rainy season, most of the little ones will walk just less than a mile to the school.

We pray to God to send us some benefactors while we keep on animating both local authorities and people in the region to work together and have local fundraising events to aid these most deserving of children.
